REDINN Leads Communication for LIFE ELEKTRA Project

Date: October 27, 2023

Today marks a significant milestone in the fight against nitrate pollution in surface and groundwater as the LIFE ELEKTRA project officially kicked off. This pioneering initiative, with project reference LIFE22-ENV-ES-LIFE-ELEKTRA/101113771, aims to apply Circular Economy principles to Nitrate removal, while also generating hydrogen and recovering waste in the process. REDINN, a renowned Organization, is proud to be part of the Project Implementation Consortium and has taken charge of Work Package 6, which focuses on Communication and Dissemination of the project results.

In a momentous step towards combatting nitrate pollution in both surface and groundwater, the LIFE ELEKTRA project has officially commenced its journey. This pioneering endeavor, bearing the project reference LIFE22-ENV-ES-LIFE-ELEKTRA/101113771, sets out to revolutionize nitrate removal while simultaneously harnessing hydrogen production and waste recovery through circular economy principles.

REDINN has assumed a pivotal role in Work Package 6, dedicated to the Communication and Dissemination of the project’s groundbreaking findings and accomplishments.

LIFE ELEKTRA represents a significant leap forward in the quest for sustainable water solutions, offering a multi-faceted approach to addressing nitrate pollution and creating a more eco-friendly future. by merging circular economy principles with cutting-edge technology, the project seeks to not only remove nitrates from water sources but also unlock the potential of hydrogen production and resource recovery.

With REDINN leading the way in communication and dissemination, the project’s successes and innovations will be shared with stakeholders, industry experts, and the public at large. This collaborative effort promises to pave the path towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible approach to water treatment and resource management.

The project budget amounts to €2,329,944.26, with 60% of the funding coming from the European Union’s LIFE program. This significant financial support is attributed to LIFE ELEKTRA’s alignment with the Green Deal, specifically subscribing to the specific objectives of the “Circular Economy and Quality of Life” subprogram. The primary aim of this subprogram is to enhance both the “Quality and Quantity of Water” through Technological Innovation for the direct removal of contaminants from water sources, in compliance with the Water Framework Directive and the Nitrates Directive.

LIFE ELEKTRA has a duration of 42 months two out of the three case studies being undertaken are located in Spain, specifically in Gandía and Gran Canaria. The third case study will be situated in the Republic of Malta. While each case study has its unique characteristics and specific nuances, their common challenge is to minimize nitrate pollution as much as possible.

During the project’s execution, there are plans to construct a mobile pilot plant that will incorporate a hybrid system powered by renewable energy sources to meet the process requirements.
